Homeschool Programs

Oakland Cemetery provides the perfect outdoor classroom for students to discover the history, art, and gardens of one of Atlanta’s favorite landmarks.

Oakland offers homeschool families two options for fun and educational experiences at Oakland. Families may attend a Homeschool Day program, our monthly homeschool day offered August-May, or book an Oakland Tour for groups of ten or more students. Select the tabs below for more details.

Homeschool Day

Explore history, art, and nature in a unique learning environment at Oakland! Homeschool Day programs offer students the opportunity to engage with one of Atlanta’s most historic landmarks through interactive, hands-on activities based on a different theme each month. Programs are age-appropriate, and educational activities correspond to Georgia Performance Standards.

Each Homeschool Day is 10 a.m. to noon. Programs are held at the Visitor Center and outside on the grounds of Oakland Cemetery.

Student tickets are $8 for children of Historic Oakland Foundation members, and $10 for children of non-members. Adult tickets are free. Space is limited, and tickets must be purchased in advance.

Homeschool Day: Black History Month

February 25, 2025

Homeschool Day: Black History Month focuses on the rich history and culture of African American communities in Atlanta, particularly through Oakland Cemetery and its connections to the legacy of Black history, culture, and art in the city.

The day is a blend of history, creativity, and environmental awareness, all centered around the vibrant history of African American culture in Atlanta.

FAQs

  • Check-in begins 15 minutes before the program starts at the Visitor Center. Click here (link) for directions and parking options for Oakland.

  • Tickets must be purchased in advance. Student tickets are $8 for children of Historic Oakland Foundation members, and $10 for children of non-members. Adult tickets are free.

  • Parents and guardians are welcome and encouraged to stay with their students during the program. A portion of each program is spent on the grounds of Oakland Cemetery, so you will also have an opportunity to learn about this historic site along with the students.

  • Be sure to purchase tickets and view our Plan Your Visit page for details about visiting Oakland. Bring a refillable water bottle for everyone in your group – there is a bottle filler in the Visitor Center. Dress appropriately for the weather and bring sunscreen, hats, and insect repellent when needed.

  • Please email Ted Ward at tward@oaklandcemetery.com as soon as possible to let us know you won’t be coming. Because of the limited capacity of each program, there is often a waiting list. Your tickets can be applied to a future Homeschool Day.

Homeschool Group Tours

Homeschool co-ops or groups of homeschool families are invited to discover the stories of citizens who shaped the development of Atlanta with a tour of Oakland Cemetery’s grounds.

Homeschool co-ops or groups can join together to book a tour for groups of 10 students or more. Tours are led by Oakland’s education volunteers.

Program Fees
Tickets are $6 for each student and adults are free. Reservations require a $100 group deposit (refundable up to five business days before the program). The balance is due at the start of the program. 

Scheduling
Programs can be scheduled Monday-Friday, 10am-4:00pm. Tours are subject to availability of guides.

Sights, Symbols, and Stories of Oakland

On this overview tour, students discover the history, the period gardens, and the art and architecture that give Oakland its distinctive character. Oakland is an outdoor museum of Atlanta’s history with over 70,000 stories to tell; stories filled with both stunning victories and heart-wrenching tragedies. Join one of our knowledgeable and entertaining guides for a 90-minute walking tour of the grounds.
