Vote to Improve Oakland’s Roads on May 24!

Historic Oakland Foundation and the City of Atlanta Parks Department partner every day to take care of historic Oakland Cemetery’s graves, gardens, buildings, roads, and pathways and ward off the ravages of time and nature. Through this exceptional partnership, Historic Oakland Foundation has achieved remarkable progress towards our mission to preserve, restore, enhance, and share historic Oakland Cemetery.

There is still so much work to be done, however, and some of it affects you every time you visit Oakland. If you’ve walked, ridden a bike, or driven into Oakland recently, you probably noticed that its roads are in significant need of repair. Over the decades, asphalt has been layered over existing asphalt, leaving Oakland’s roads bowed, cracking, and covered in holes. The transitions to Oakland’s historic brick gutters are also treacherous in many places. We have a unique opportunity to change that, but we need your help.

Repaving and mobility improvements to Oakland Cemetery’s roads has been included as one of the projects Atlanta voters have the opportunity to approve on May 24.

Repaving and mobility improvements to Oakland Cemetery’s roads has been included as one of the projects Atlanta voters have the opportunity to approve on May 24 (or with early voting). If passed, these three City of Atlanta ballot measures “will put $750M toward vital transportation, recreation, public safety and arts projects across the city.” With better roadways, Oakland will be easier to traverse, safer, and more accessible. If you love Oakland and want its roads milled down and repaved, please vote to approve the two bonds and the renewal of one special sales tax that will make this project possible.

Historic Oakland Foundation is grateful to our partners in Atlanta City Council, the Mayor’s Office, and the Department of Parks and Recreation for prioritizing improvements to Oakland Cemetery in recognition of this special place’s importance as a resource for all Atlantans. We hope the bond passes so that we can keep working with the City to continue to make major improvements to your favorite historic cemetery!
