Volunteer at Oakland Cemetery
In 2018, nearly 300 volunteers donated over 16,000 volunteer hours to help fulfill Historic Oakland Foundation’s mission to preserve, restore, enhance, and share Oakland Cemetery and its rich history. Volunteers lead tours, staff the Visitor Center, work in the gardens and support our special events throughout the year.
Who are our volunteers?
Our volunteers, like Oakland’s permanent residents, come from all over, are of all ages and have a wide range of interests. What connects all of them is a passion for Oakland Cemetery, its history, and its beautiful 48 acres.
Our volunteers bring so many talents and skills to Oakland. Their contributions are innumerable and extensive.
What do our volunteers do?
HOF’s volunteers give guided tours on weekends and during the week, staff the visitor center in the historic Bell Tower inside Oakland Cemetery, support special events with everything from ticket collection to beer selling, garden with our expert gardeners, and help our PRO Team clean and restore monuments and headstones. Our volunteers bring so many talents and skills to Oakland. Their contributions are innumerable and extensive. If you think you can help, we’ll find a way to put your talents to use! We provide training for each of our volunteer opportunities.
What’s in it for me?
Oakland volunteers not only have the great sense of satisfaction knowing that they’re playing a central role in the preservation and restoration of Historic Oakland Cemetery—Atlanta’s most tangible link to the past—but are also a part of a big, caring community of volunteers. HOF hosts a volunteer picnic in the Spring and a holiday appreciation party in December. We also plan to organize enrichment activities in 2019.
