Visitor Center Construction Update: July 2024

As the hot Atlanta summer rumbles on things are also heating up at the new Visitor Center! For anyone visiting Oakland recently, you’ll have noticed the exterior of the building is almost complete: storefront glass is in, doors installed, and the brick work complete. If you’ve peaked through the soaring glass facade, you’ll also have noticed that the drywall is complete, painting is nearing completion, and the sub-contractors have turned to “finishes” (think tile work in the bathrooms, counters and cabinets, and stair treads).

If you’ve poked your head over the construction fencing, you may also have seen that the hardscape around the building begin to take shape. We are so excited about the plaza, entryways, and landscape elements of the project and how they’ll form complimentary spaces for visitors and community members to spend time in, whether starting a tour or visit to the cemetery, or enjoy a popsicle in the shade of the building.

Recently the stairs and ADA accessible ramp on the eastern plaza (between the cemetery and the new building) were formed and poured and work is underway to complete the plaza as well as the sidewalk on the south side of the building along MLK.

The progress on this exterior work is so energizing and takes us ever close to the project’s completion! We can’t wait to open the building early in 2025 where we’ll be able to act as a community hub, introduce you to our brand new Museum Store, and host even more visitors.
