Picnic in the Park
June 25 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
Join us for a morning of free, self-guided family fun at Oakland Cemetery!
From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on June 25, we’ll pass out activity bags to participating families at Oakland’s main gate! The bags will be packed full of coloring books, art supplies, mini-scavenger hunts, and other fun. One bag per family while supplies last.
Explore Oakland and find a shady spot to create art. We’ll be handing out sweet cold treats, but we encourage families to pack a picnic—just like the Victorians—for their visit to Oakland. Our program partner and sweet-treat supplier, Grant Park Market, is a great spot to pick up your picnic snacks!
This family-friendly event is a part of Oakland’s Juneteenth celebration, two weeks of free programs open and available to the public! Juneteenth National Independence Day, celebrated on June 19, is a federal holiday that commemorates the end of enslavement in the United States.
The first 25 activity bags will include a special Juneteenth Edition coloring book from ColorATL. This interactive coloring book includes artwork from 19 Black, Atlanta-based artists to celebrate and increase awareness about the Juneteenth holiday. The artwork themes range from history, community solidarity, solutions for a healthier future, and celebration of African American culture.
Activity bags will also include mini-scavenger hunts that explore Atlanta’s Black history and the historic African American Burial Grounds. Kids will become history detectives and discover stories of community and resilience at Oakland.
Not all areas of Historic Oakland Cemetery are wheelchair or stroller accessible. The main entrance is paved with cobblestones, and both the East Gate and Memorial Drive Gate entrances have either a step or curb.
Complimentary parking is available in the gravel lot outside of the Front Gate at the corner of MLK Jr. Dr. and Oakland Ave. This parking lot is not monitored. You can find a map here: https://oaklandcemetery.com/map/
Drinks and snacks are available for purchase in the Visitors Center, located in the parking lot.
