Margaret Mitchell and Gone with the Wind

September 12 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Free
This tour visits the gravesites of Margaret Mitchell, Mitchell family members, and pioneers who inspired Gone with the Wind characters.

Scarlett and Rhett, fiddle-dee-dee, and “frankly my dear”—Margaret Mitchell didn’t know how much of an impact she would have on popular culture when her Civil War novel, Gone with the Wind, was published in 1936. The Pulitzer Prize-winning novel sold more than 1 million copies in its first six months of publication, has been published in 40+ languages, and was made into an Oscar-winning epic. This tour visits the gravesites of Margaret Mitchell, her husband John Marsh, Mitchell family members, and pioneers of Atlanta. Meet several real-life residents believed to inspire her novel’s characters, such as madam Belle Watling and Doctor Meade.

This tour starts outside of the Bell Tower Building (at the Visitors Center and Museum Shop) at 10:30 AM. Please arrive a few minutes early to check in with the volunteer at the front desk.

Spaces are extremely limited, so we recommend purchasing your tickets in advance.

Historic Oakland Foundation is committed to following CDC public health guidelines. Masks will be required for all guests to enter the Museum Shop. Vaccinated guests can remove their masks during a tour. If an at-risk tour guest is uncomfortable, all tour guests will agree to continue wearing their masks for the duration of the tour to ensure the comfort of all visitors.

Accessibility

Not all areas of Historic Oakland Cemetery are wheelchair accessible. Please let us know if you need an accessible route when purchasing your ticket. There is designated parking for vehicles with a disability permit behind the Bell Tower Building/Visitors Center. This is the best option for parking as the main entrance is paved with cobblestones, and both the East Gate and Memorial Drive Gate entrances have either a step or curb.

ASL interpreter available if given 3 days (72 hours) notice before the start of the tour.
