A Look Back at Illumine 2019

After a two-year hiatus, the celebrated nighttime arts event Illumine returns to light up Oakland Cemetery this year from April 21 to May 1. Over the two-week period, the art, architecture, and verdant splendor of the cemetery’s spring gardens will be woven with light and texture, inviting guests to explore the cemetery in new ways. The glowing installations will cast a new light on the hidden stories of Oakland, enlightening visitors and brightening the path through the event.

In 2019 Illumine highlighted unmarked graves in North Public Grounds and the section of the cemetery once called Slave Square, along with spotlighting the shapes and forms of Oakland’s monuments and botanicals.
